Import Controller

Our client has grown exponentially over the last 5 years and are now looking to expand their operation by bringing all import activities in-house. The aim is to streamline the supply chain, ensure the timely and cost-effective import of goods from around the globe and reduce associated costs such as demurrage. As a key player in this initiative, you'll have the opportunity to build and shape an import team from the ground up, making a lasting impact on the business.

Job Overview:

As the Import Controller, you'll be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's importing processes, bringing the function in-house for the first time. This is a newly created position, and you'll play a crucial role in developing a comprehensive import strategy, managing international supplier relationships, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, and building a high-performing import team. You'll work closely with the Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to optimize the supply chain and achieve cost efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities:

Leading the transition to In-House importing, you'll establish new processes and systems to ensure all imports comply with customs laws and international trade regulations and improve the accuracy of paperwork such as health certificates, tariffs and tax requirement, thus reducing delays.

To be able to deliver these objectives you'll recruit, train, and manage a team of import coordinators, ensuring they are aligned with company goals and deliver efficient and compliant import operations.

You'll build and maintain strong relationships with international suppliers, shipping agents, and other stakeholders, negotiating terms and managing contracts, as well as identifying opportunities for cost savings in the import process. It's critical you can work closely with internal departments, including Procurement, Warehousing, and Finance, to ensure seamless integration of the import function into the broader supply chain.

As well reporting on the overall performance of the department you'll identify potential risks in the import process (e.g., delays, regulatory changes, supply chain disruptions) and implement mitigation strategies.

Requirements:

The key criterion for this position is that you have proven experience in inbound import operations and can demonstrate how this can be brought in-house removing the reliance on 3PL. Strong understanding of international trade regulations, customs procedures, and shipping as well as experience in team building and ongoing development.

Naturally analytical with a strong attention to detail and the ability to make data-driven decisions coupled with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with a proactive and problem-solving attitude are some of your key attributes. Proficiency in import-related software and systems is a distinct advantage.

What We Offer:

This is a fantastic opportunity to build and shape a new function within the company in a dynamic and collaborative work environment that offers personal development and growth opportunities. So, if you're a results-driven professional with a passion for international trade and logistics, and you're excited by the challenge of building something from the ground up, we'd love to hear from you.
