Transport Manager - Permanent Placement

The team at Recruit A Driver are looking for a Transport Manager to join our Batley based client within their fast paced transport operation on a permanent placement. The successful Transport Manager will report into the head of operations, you will provide strong leadership across the Transport Department, with full responsibility and accountability for managing the site operation.

As the Transport Manager you will lead a large Management, Driver and Admin team in the delivery of exceptional customer service whilst remaining cost effective, ensuring full legal compliance with a safety-first culture.

About the role

As a Transport Manager for our client you will:

  • Managing a large transport operation delivering to customers in line with the agreed service level and customer service metrics.
  • Fully accountable for the safe delivery and leadership of the Transport Operation for the site.
  • Ensuring full legislative compliance across all areas including driving regulations, whilst clearly operating within health and safety guidelines and operational procedures.
  • Planning, costing, and allocating routes and vehicles, ensuring sufficient flexibility is in place to meet the varying and changing needs of the customers.
  • Auditing and Delivering costs within budget, with full root cause analysis in the event of variance.
  • Ensure that all in-house vehicles are compliant with all legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements and where necessary escalate issues and make recommendations to the Commercial Director.
  • Develop and implement a proactive, planned, and structured approach to the maintenance of fleet vehicles, keeping within the designated budget and ensuring all vehicles used are fit for purpose and the customer experience is of a high standard.
  • Deliver effective communication to ensure that information flows through all levels of the colleagues effectively and regularly to all key customers and colleagues to promote engagement and build good working relationships.
  • To create and drive a culture of continuous improvement across the department with the deployment of the relevant support mechanisms and tools.
  • Ensuring all policies and procedures are followed that enable Partners to be treated fairly and with respect in line with the Partnership Principles.
  • To create a clear succession plan with the identification, coaching, support and development of the entire transport team.
  • Manage and develop a team of drivers and loaders, who may be working remotely, either alone or in small teams, ensuring high standards of service delivery through the consistent application of recognised standards and established policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Take the lead in resolving unforeseen problems as they arise ensuring appropriate resolution of these and to utilise the learning to plan for future similar scenarios.

What you need to know:

  • Shift pattern: 07.00 starts, Monday to Friday, A flexible approach to working hours will be required due to the nature of the industry.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience of leading a team within a Logistics Distribution environment, where they have demonstrated excellent leadership behaviours and developed others' skills and capabilities.
  • Confident decision-making skills, Strong problem-solving skills and able to make critical time pressured decisions, accepting, adapting to and delivering change effectively.
  • Strong knowledge of transport compliance including an understanding of Driver Hours Regulations.
  • Safety and results orientated, cost and deadline driven
  • Proven ability to plan and navigate journeys confidently.
  • Fleet management experience
  • A management qualification CPC
  • Computer literate - Microsoft Office in particular strong skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • A confident communicator with excellent written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills who is equally capable of working in a team and one to one environment
  • Experience in managing budgets & contracts.
  • Self-motivation and a passion to deliver excellent customer service
