About the Team

Our in-house legal team plays a vital role in protecting and exploiting the intellectual property rights subsisting in our mapping and geospatial data; supporting business operations; and driving our brand's success.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and solutions orientated paralegal to join our team and provide essential support to the in-house lawyers across a range of matters, focusing primarily on intellectual property law, brand protection, consumer law and research agreements. You will have a strong legal foundation and be eager to apply your knowledge and skills in a dynamic, collaborative environment, managing a wide and varied caseload and contributing to OS's continued growth and excellence.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Lawyers in providing advice to the business across a range of commercial matters to ensure business operations comply with legal requirements. In particular in the following areas:
  • Supporting the management, protection and exploitation of OS's intellectual property rights (IPR's), including trademarks and brand assets, copyright and database rights.
  • Assisting with the management of our trademark portfolio by leading on the review of trademark watch notices, identifying potential conflicts and dealing with enforcement action for unauthorised brand usage.
  • Supporting with trademark licensing programmes and documentation.
  • Reviewing, researching and taking enforcement action on minor cases of unlicensed / unauthorised use of OS's mapping and geospatial data and branding, including the drafting of cease-and-desist letters.
  • Supporting the Consumer Business Unit activities, by researching and advising on consumer law; reviewing, drafting and advising on consumer facing agreements, terms and conditions, mobile apps, policies and business operations to ensure legal compliance with consumer protection laws and regulations.
  • Collaborating with the internal Consumer and Brand teams to provide guidance on sponsorship and branding campaigns and opportunities
  • Supporting the drafting, review and negotiation of standard and non-standard commercial contracts and communications.
  • Supporting the creation of standard business templates and the creation of know how.
  • Promoting Legal Services to the wider business including the delivery of blog articles and training sessions.
  • Liaising with colleagues and third parties.

What we're looking for

Essential experience/skills

  • Law Degree, CILEX , relevant paralegal practice qualification or equivalent; or relevant paralegal work experience.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of contract law and experience of drafting standard and non-standard contractual documentation.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of intellectual property law (focusing on copyright, database right, trademarks).
  • Good knowledge and understanding of consumer law.
  • Legal research skills and experience.
  • A self-starter who is curious and willing to learn.
  • A solution driven approach to providing legal advice and proactive with stakeholder engagement.
  • A team player who will take on the everyday routine duties as well as the wider projects and initiatives to work to support the team's objectives.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, and to prioritise your workload.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain legal concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent IT skills, including Office 365 Applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint etc).
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • A sound understanding of confidentiality and strong ethical mindset.

Desirable experience/skills

  • Demonstrable work experience as a paralegal in all or any of the following areas of law: consumer law, intellectual property law, marketing, sponsorship, mobile apps, research.

Location: We embrace a hybrid working model at OS. We have a fantastic office in Southampton, Hampshire where you will be required to spend 3 days a week, with the rest of the days being your choice as to whether you work from home or at the office.
