Not only will you receive fully funded qualifications you will get real-world, hands-on experience of working in an aerospace engineering environment.

As an Apprentice Aerospace Engineer, you will be expected to develop the high level of skill and knowledge required to carry out maintenance, repairs and modifications to a variety of aircraft, safely, on time and within budget. You will then use this knowledge to move into the Engineering and design teams with the potential of completing further qualifications. After the first year of your apprenticeship this will become an office-based role.

The Apprenticeship

As an Apprentice - Aerospace Engineer you will be following the Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Standard. More information on this standard can be found on the institute for apprenticeships website (https://#removed#).

You will gain the following qualifications during the 4-year programme:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Aerospace & Aviation Engineering
  • Level 4 Diploma in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (Competence qualification)
  • Level 4 HNC in Engineering

You will work towards developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required through a range of workshop training, classroom sessions and on the job learning. Not only will you develop your technical skills you will also have the opportunity to develop the behaviours needed to set the foundation for your future career.

During the first year of the programme you will be completing the same hand skills qualification as our Aircraft Fitter apprentices, you will then complete a placement on the shop floor working on the aircraft. During years two, three and four you will complete rotations and experiences across the aerospace engineering teams whilst completing your competence qualification and your HNC.

Some of your responsibilities as an Apprentice Aerospace Engineer will include:

  • Attending and engaging with training, including exams and 1-2-1 meetings with your tutors/assessors.
  • Managing your time effectively to complete all coursework, assignments and exams required to achieve the apprenticeship.
  • Reflecting on your own practice and experiences and take any feedback onboard.
  • Scheduled aircraft maintenance and servicing.
  • Unscheduled aircraft maintenance including defect rectification to aircraft systems and components.
  • Repairs to airframe structures.
  • Modifications to aircraft structures, systems and interiors.
  • Related duties, including operation of ground equipment, assistance in aircraft movements and aircraft delivery.
  • Liaising with the shop floor to assess damage and how practical repair schemes can be designed.
  • Using specification data to design repairs including material selection, stress calculations and inspection requirements.
  • Designing modifications for airframe or avionic systems.
  • Using several computer-based design tools and prototyping.
  • Working within a project team to transfer requirements into deliverable products.

Entry requirements:

  • You must have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C/4-9 (or equivalent) including Mathematics, English Language and Science.
  • Level 3 qualification in Engineering or A Levels preferably including Maths and Physics.
  • You must not have already completed the level 2 and 4 qualifications listed above in the apprenticeship section.
  • In order to receive apprenticeship funding you must have the right to work in the UK and meet residency eligibility requirements.

Please note that assessment centres for this role will be held towards the end of March 2025.
