We are recruiting for an Inspector of Seamarks. This is a unique role within a specialised department that sets the requirements for Aids to Navigation around our coasts. The role that Trinity House plays is vital in creating a safe environment for ships to operate around our coasts. As most of the UK's imports and exports travel by sea, Trinity House plays an essential part in supporting the UK's economy.

You will be a senior member of the Navigation Department, reporting to the Navigation (Examiner) Manager and working closely with the Local Aids to Navigation Manager. As well as operating our own Aids to Navigation, Trinity House is responsible for the superintendence and management of Aids to Navigation around our coasts and in our ports that are operated by local authorities. The inspector of seamarks leads the requirements for that superintendence and management function, inspecting over eleven thousand Aids to Navigation per year across England and Wales.

You will plan and execute the annual inspection programme for local Aids to Navigation, liaising with Trinity House Operations Centre, Local Harbour Authorities and other Aid to Navigation providers as appropriate. As well as conducting inspections, the role also involves some auditing of Harbour Authorities which is necessary to ensure their Aids to Navigation comply with guidelines provided by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) and any obligations under the Port Marine Safety Code.

Included in the inspection programme are the offshore structures for oil, gas and renewable energy and as such you will be liaise closely with the Marine Operations Department and spend some time at sea to carry out the inspections. This role also involves carrying out a full analysis of the results of the inspections and audits producing statistical reports for both internal and external promulgation. A valid ENG1 and Personal Survival Techniques certificate or equivalent offshore certification are mandatory.

You will preferably be a Master Mariner (or RN equivalent) with an excellent knowledge of our coast, (Command experience would be desirable), have a good knowledge of the IALA Maritime Buoyage System with strong IT, communication and report writing skills. Knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code and marine licencing would also be advantageous but is not essential.

The role involves substantial lone working and will comprise of extensive travel away from home, typically four days a week. A company car will be provided and a clean UK driving licence is essential.
