Rate: £48 per hour (Inside IR35)

About the Role:

Southwark Council is seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer to join its Legal Services team on a temporary basis. This role involves providing high-quality legal advice and representation on a range of general civil litigation and advisory matters.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert legal advice to the Cabinet, Committees, Council bodies, and elected Members.
  • Handle a broad range of civil litigation matters, including:
    • Landlord and tenant disputes (commercial and residential)
    • Commercial debt recovery and contractual disputes
    • Disputes related to non-payment of community care charges
    • Inquests and injunctions
    • Disputes relating to electronic communications
    • Complex non-domestic rates and council tax issues
    • Judicial Review claims
    • Building safety matters
  • Attend Committees, working groups, and project meetings to provide legal support.
  • Draft legal documents, including agreements, pleadings, and contracts.
  • Represent the Council at courts and tribunals where required.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations and good governance practices.
About You:
  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEX).
  • Strong experience in civil litigation, ideally within a local government or public sector environment.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and advocacy skills.
