Asset Management Services sits within the Traded Services Division of the Environment, Neighbourhoods, and Growth Department. This division encompasses a range of services positively impacting residents and borough users, including play equipment repairs, manufacturing steel products, decorative lighting installation, pest control services, and fleet management. The role involves working within the geographical area of existing or new contracts, which may extend beyond borough boundaries.

What does a Service/Workshops Manager do at Southwark Council?

As the Service/Workshops Manager, you will oversee the engineering infrastructure and workshop-related operational services across the council. Your role will be crucial in ensuring that engineering projects are efficiently managed, budgets are controlled, and services are delivered to the highest standard. You will also be responsible for coordinating contractors, managing a team of operatives, and ensuring all health and safety requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage workshop operations, allocating resources effectively to ensure seamless service delivery.

  • Oversee staff, fleet, equipment, and materials, ensuring efficient planning and organisation.

  • Monitor budgets and drive income generation, ensuring value for money in all operations.

  • Develop and implement safe systems of work, ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards.

  • Maintain and enhance customer-focused services, working closely with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Drive continuous improvement by introducing innovative ways of working and optimising service efficiency.

  • Ensure all projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to a high standard.

  • Prepare performance reports, monitor contract effectiveness, and drive improvement strategies

We are seeking a proactive and results-driven leader with:

  • Professional experience in engineering, asset management, or a related field.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage teams.

  • Excellent financial acumen with experience in budget planning and cost control.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of contract law, statutory regulations, and health & safety practices.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including senior management, contractors, and the public.

  • A problem-solving mindset, capable of developing innovative and practical solutions.

  • A commitment to customer service excellence and continuous improvement.

  • A full UK driving licence (essential).
