Engineering Design Coordinator
ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Deliver a fully integrated and coordinated design ready for construction to meet project requirements.
• Responsible for a large multi-disciplinary design team, located in the UK and overseas.
• Ensure the designs take full account of the construction methodology, sequence and temporary works, under the direction of the Principal Contractor's Temporary Works Coordinator and supported by the Temporary Works Design Lead.
• Ensure the role of the Designer is fulfilled in accordance with CDM2015 and ensure that a CDM Design Risk Register is maintained documenting the design actions taken with due regard to the Principles of Prevention. This requires active use of CDM Safetibase and engagement with operations and maintenance representatives.
• Ensure the design resources have the competency to fulfil the role of Designer (as required by CDM) and coordinate with the Health & Safety department for training and development.
• Ensure multi-disciplinary input to the design for the necessary expertise and coordination, including other teams and external stakeholders.
• Ensure the design meets the Environmental Minimum Requirements, including all requirements for environmental mitigation.
• Embed the principles of the design vision under the direction of the Technical Directorate.
• Designs to be fully compliant with the Works Information Contract Requirements Technical (CRT), Technical Standards.
• Designs to be fully assured in accordance with the Works Information and the Project Execution Plan and Technical Assurance processes. Acceptance of the design by the Technical Approval Authority and external approval bodies such as Highways Authorities, Network Rail, Statutory Undertakers.
• Acceptance of the design by internal checkers and reviewers (including CAT 2 checks and other departments). Acceptance of the design by CAT3 checkers.
• Work in accordance with the Design Management Plan and the Basis of Design documents.
• Ensure Design Briefs are prepared prior to design work commencing.
• Ensure Technical Queries are raised in a timely manner and seek early resolution to avoid impact on the design programme.
• Maintain an up-to-date design assumption log and close out prior to final technical assurance stages.
• Maintain an up-to-date design risk register and close out prior to final technical assurance stages.
• Ensure Departures are raised and accepted where strictly necessary for area of responsibility.
• Work closely with the Consents team to ensure design deliverables are produced to meet consent application requirements.
• Work closely with the stakeholder management and community liaison teams to ensure designs are shared externally where necessary.
• Ensure work is undertaken in accordance with the BIM Execution Plan, ensuring that design information conforms to the necessary standards and can be shared for use in 4D and 5D planning and cost estimation.
• Prepare Design Interface Control Documents in coordination with the Design & Engineering Interface Control Leads (where appointed for key stakeholders).
• Prepare designs in accordance with the agreed design programme and with an agreed resource to meet budget constraints.
• Timely communication of risks to the Design Project Manager and undertake risk mitigation actions, as agreed at Risk Reduction meetings).
• Timely communication of change to the Design Project Manager, providing support for preparation of Compensation Events (cost and programme impacts).
Technical skills to be aligned to the type of work in the section of responsibility, e.g. highways, highways structures, high speed rail structures, conventional rail interface, earthworks, tunnels, retaining walls.
EXPERIENCE
• Qualified Civil Engineer or similar equivalent, with multi-disciplinary breadth
• Excellent communication skills
• Understanding of the construction environment for safe and buildable designs
• Experience of working with a major design consultancy
• Highly organised with good management and coordination skills
• Respecting equality and diversity
• Leading teams, people management skills, effective delegation, mentoring & coaching and developing others
• Working knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and, in particular, Designer and Principal Designer duties
• Good Digital Skills
The following qualities are desirable:
• Minimum 5 years relevant experience
• Large scale linear project experience (e.g. rail, highway or similar).
• Experience and confidence to constructively challenge to optimise design solutions which balance project requirements, risks and constraints
• Negotiation and issue resolution skills
• Membership of a relevant professional body
• CSCS card
