We are seeking a dynamic and inspirational teacher of Art & Design to join a thriving and vibrant Art Department in the heart of the city. This is a permanent, 0.85 role for a suitably qualified and experienced Teacher of Art & Design. Candidates must be registered with GTCS.

Department Details

The Edinburgh Academy Art & Design department has an excellent reputation for exciting, ambitious and varied work. The post requires someone who can further develop this reputation, setting high standards achieved through rigorous subject and skills knowledge, preferably across a range of media.

The fundamentals of drawing and painting are at the core of our teaching approach. The department boasts excellent facilities and studio classrooms. There is resourcing for printmaking, ceramics, photography, graphic design and film making.

Art & Design is taught as a compulsory subject until it becomes optional along with Photography at the start of the GCSE course (S3). A good number of pupils then move on to the Eduqas AS/A Level or SQA Higher Art & Design and/or SQA Higher Photography. Several pupils each year will go on to study at the top Art Colleges in a wide range of degree courses. There are opportunities for pupils to work outwith the curriculum through Activities, Arts Award and evening life drawing classes.

The Department makes full use of local trips to draw inspiration from this beautiful city and the many Art Galleries within walking distance. The Department has an excellent academic record overall which it seeks to maintain and to develop over the next years.

Art Staff

The department consists of three teaching staff, head of department, art technician and artist in residence. This is an experienced team with a good range of skills and creativity who encourage pupils’ independent creativity and confidence. Staff are encouraged to continue developing their subject knowledge and skills through both internal training and outside courses.



Main Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities associated with all teachers at the Edinburgh Academy are:

  1. To plan, prepare and teach lessons to all assigned pupils according to their educational needs.
  2. To assess, record and report on the progress of the pupils within the guidelines written in the Staff Handbook.
  3. To engage with the wider School Curriculum in a manner which is consistent with the ethos of the School.
  4. To carry out such administrative and other routine tasks as are outlined in the Staff Handbook.
  5. To demonstrate a commitment to both individual professional development and to the developing curriculum in the School.
  6. To carry out any other duties and to assume any other responsibilities as the Rector shall from time to time reasonably request.
  7. To be conscious at all times of the importance of the external image of the School and to act in a professional and constructive manner with pupils, parents and external agencies.

Reporting

The Teacher of Art & Design will report to the Head of Department on all aspects of Department operation, examination performance and staffing. The successful applicant will report to the Deputy Rectors on matters of whole school commitments, professional development and personal absence.



Ideal Candidate:

Our ideal candidate will have the following qualities and qualifications:

  • GTCS registered (or ability to be) with an appropriate degree and relevant teaching qualifications to be able to teach from P7 up to a minimum of Higher Art and Design
  • Honours degree relevant to the teaching aspects of the role.
  • The ability to communicate concepts in Art, Design and Photography in an articulate, positive and sensitive way.
  • The ability to use a variety of teaching strategies to engage and challenge students of all abilities.
  • A deep subject knowledge and the ability to communicate it.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Be able to work as part of a team as well as under their own initiative
  • Be proactive and imaginative in developing new ideas and resources as well as flexible in adapting to curriculum changes
  • The ideal candidate will have experience of teaching Art & Design to Higher level
  • Proficiency in a range of Art and Design media.
  • It is desirable but not essential that the candidate has experience of teaching Photography at either Higher or GCSE level.
  • Be willing to get involved in the wider life of the school and participate in the co-curricular programme .
  • Be committed to and fully conversant with the safeguarding, child protection and pastoral care responsibilities required of all teachers.
  • Be able to demonstrate the School's values in their day to day working life
