When you see the world as we do, you want to take better care of the planet's resources and make it a better place to live for everyone. We're looking for someone who sees the world in a similar way, to take up an exciting Education, Communications and Outreach Officer role, reducing waste and increasing recycling in Birmingham.

If you're a creative people-person, enjoy a fast paced environment, and can demonstrate good organisational and communication skills - alongside an interest in sustainability - this role will suit you perfectly. This is an entry-level role with plenty of opportunities to progress within the contract - so even if you don't think you meet all the requirements, we'd still love to hear from you.

What we can offer you:
  • Option to join the Veolia Pension Scheme
  • Access to Veolia Rewards, benefits and discounts
  • Access to free physiotherapy sessions during your work hours
  • 25 days annual leave + statutory bank holidays and any accumulated TOIL
  • Travel reimbursement for any non-commute related travel
  • Training and development opportunities so we can help you grow in your role
  • NEW from 2024: progression opportunity to develop into a Senior Officer

What will you be doing?

In the ECO Officer position, you'll work closely with your line manager to deliver our recycling and community engagement projects involving our fantastic local communities. You'll get the chance to take responsibility for the budget, timeline and quality of project delivery. You'll also be responsible for delivering educational sessions to schools and tours of our Birmingham facilities.

You'll identify engaging news stories and campaign ideas, feeding them to the regional digital and PR team, as well as working towards regional and contract goals. You'll build strong relationships with your client, Birmingham City Council, customers and colleagues at all levels across the contract.

You'll also deliver internal communications campaigns to improve our safety performance and working culture. There will be plenty of chances to create content (from social media posts to videos, newsletter content, press releases and more).

The team do occasionally work from home, but as this role is engagement focused, it's best suited to someone who is keen to work within Birmingham and at our office and visitor centre based in Tyseley. This is the ideal job for someone who likes to be out and about, as it's not entirely desk-based, involving regular attendance at community events, visits to depots and more.

What we're looking for

Essential:
  • Experience of project and/or events management (projects can include university-related or personal)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of building strong customer and/or stakeholder relationships
  • A flexible and proactive approach that prioritises meeting our client's Birmingham City Council and local resident's needs
  • A strong work ethic
  • Good level of fitness - some days involve being on your feet and moving items around pre/post events
Desirable:
  • Recycling and waste industry knowledge/general interest in sustainability
  • Understanding or experience of working with local authorities
  • Ability to develop creative visual content across multiple formats
  • Understanding of PR, social media, social advertising and digital communications
