The Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the heart of historic Portsmouth.

The Role

They are recruiting for a suitably qualified and experienced science technician to join the school as soon as possible. Working in their science departments, which are located in a state of the art Science Centre, technicians are assigned to support practical work across Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Training is provided to enable technicians to work flexibly across all three sciences as needed. There will be opportunities for the successful candidate to further develop areas of particular interest or specialism according to qualifications and previous experience.

This is a part time, term time only position, to include attendance at all Professional Development Days (INSET) in the school calendar. During published PGS school terms, the hours of work will be 15 hours per week working 08.30 - 16.30 on Monday and Tuesday with a 30 minute unpaid lunchbreak each day. There is an option for this role to be extended to 22.5 hours per week to include Wednesday to suit the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

To provide high quality technical support for teachers across Biology, Chemistry and Physics
To contribute to risk assessments for experimental work conducted in the department
To contribute to the Experimental Log Book
To collect and deliver required scientific apparatus and chemicals, as required
To maintain good records in support of the practical curriculum
To contribute to the ordering of supplies/resources
To maintain a focus on safety for self and experiments performed by teachers and pupils
To ensure the safeguarding of pupils
The Ideal Candidate

A good standard of education, with excellent spoken and written English (essential)
Experience of working in a team (essential)
A good standard of education, ideally to degree level in a science subject (desirable)
Experience of working in a lab environment in a technician role (desirable)
Highly organised and with excellent attention to detail
A flexible and proactive attitude to the role, with the ability to plan ahead and respond promptly using initiative
Excellent communication skills
Strong IT skills
Willingness to undertake all necessary safeguarding and other training
