About us
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Fabrications Laboratory (FabLab) at SWC and be at the forefront of innovative scientific research through the design, development and deployment of new research instruments. Our highly skilled team of engineers provide multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing expertise to support groundbreaking research.

We offer a working environment equipped with state-of-the-art design and manufacturing technologies for the rapid prototyping of electronic, 3D printed, fluidic and precision machined parts. The FabLab also operates a multidisciplinary MakerSpace facility enabling scientists at all levels to creatively experiment and prototype ideas.

About the role
The FabLab Research Engineer (Electronics & Embedded Systems) performs highly skilled work through design, development, manufacture, assembly and validation of analogue and digital electronics. Working with the broader innovation and research team, you will support and accelerate innovative scientific research through the design, development, and deployment of new research instruments. You will be responsible for the use and maintenance of the in-house PCB prototyping facility. As such, you will assist engineers and scientists with their electronics needs ranging from advice to manufacturing prototype electronic circuits.

This position is grant funded until 31st October 2025 in the first instance. SWC is externally funded with funding awarded in five-year tranches and subject to successful grant renewal, staff posts will be extended in line with successive funding periods.

About you
To be considered for the position you will hold a degree level or master's in electrical engineering or equivalent professional experience specialised in analogue and digital electronics. You will be able to work in an agile team environment, applying modern deign tools and innovative development processes. Considerable practial capability, design ingenuity, multi-disciplinary awareness and creativity is essential.

You will have strong knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals and demonstrable experience of interpreting customer requirements for electronic systems. Expertise in electronic CAD for schematic capture, simulation and printed circuit layout for multilayer and flexi-rigid boards is essential. The ability to write clear, maintainable and well documented code is essential along with an excellent understanding of embedded firmware architecture. You will have be able to identify and creatively solve a broad range of problems using an analytical approach.
