Our client, a global engineering consultancy, is looking for a Principal Engineer - Power Electronics, to join their team in Leamington Spa. This is a permanent position working 3 days on-site and 2 days at home.

They specialise in rapid engineering and development of sustainable electrified propulsion systems and associated technologies, working directly and collaboratively with automotive, commercial vehicle, off-highway, aerospace and defence OEMs, Tier-1s and industry research bodies through their technical centres in North America, the U.K. and India.

Position Description:

In the role of Principal Engineer of Power Electronics, you will develop power electronics systems for a wide variety of applications from clean sheet through to hardware. This will involve developing requirements, circuit design, component selection and managing the implementation of prototype hardware for traction inverters, DCDC converters, On Board Chargers and other associated systems. Development of the functionality and performance of bespoke designs and new technology will be required in the virtual, HiL and hardware testing environments in DSD's well equipped facility. The role involves operating in a dynamic project environment including technical, commercial and customer management.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and specification of magnetics and capacitors for power converters and inverters
Lead design of mixed signal systems and processing platforms
Lead simulation activities using industry tools (e.g. Simscape & PLECS)
Collaborate and advise on control strategies for power converters and inverters
Design to standards IEC61508, ISO26262, CISPR25
Leadership of multi person/cross functional, technically, and commercially challenging projects
Build and own relationships with key customers
Identify and generate new technical capability for the function
Take ownership of large and cross functional project proposals, business development, marketing activities and presenting the company
Continuous personal development, taking an active role in the technical and professional development of others within the function
Working collaboratively with colleagues, clients, stakeholders and contributing to the team ethic at work
Acting as a role model for DSD's values and professional standards
You will need:

Essential

Extensive experience in the development of power electronics and magnetics technology e.g. inverters, OBC, DC/DC, AC/DC etc in at least two main sectors: automotive, aerospace, off-highway, commercial vehicle, defence, clean energy and/or marine
Experience in the design of digital and mixed signal control and interface circuits
Experience in the attenuation of electrical noise and design for EMC
Expertise in the development of power electronic and magnetic systems in simulation environments
The ability to plan and lead multi-person development projects and develop technical relationships with customers
A degree or higher in (technical area) engineering OR related discipline OR equivalent demonstratable experience
Desirable

Familiarity with digital motor control schemes for a variety of motor technologies (IPM, SPM, ASM, SR etc) - FOC, field weakened operation, overmodulation, harmonic current injection for NVH, fault and protection schemes etc
A track record in the development of power electronics hardware in a lab, rig and final sector environment for demanding applications
The ability to manage PCB layout, mechanical system design and the manufacture and assembly of power electronic systems
Experience in the simulation and design of fluid systems, thermal simulation and management in power electronics systems
Training in the safe use of high power, high voltage development and test equipment
