My client is a leading supplier of slitter rewinders and converting machinery worldwide.

He is looking for a skilled and proactive Controls Engineer with experience in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

Successful candidates will be responsible for designing, programming, testing, and maintaining PLC-based control systems.

Candidates should also be experienced in troubleshooting, optimizing system performance, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • PLC Programming: Design, develop, and implement PLC programs for automation systems using platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Mitsubishi.
  • System Design: Work with cross-functional teams to develop control systems for various machinery and processes.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues related to PLC programming, I/O devices, electrical controls, and field devices.
  • System Integration: Integrate PLC systems with SCADA, HMI, and other industrial control systems to ensure smooth operation.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Test and simulate control systems to ensure proper functionality before deploying them in live production environments.
  • Documentation: Prepare detailed technical documentation, including PLC programs, system specifications, electrical schematics, and operator manuals.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify areas for process improvement, optimize control systems for better performance, and recommend upgrades or changes to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with electrical, mechanical engineers, and production teams to integrate control systems into broader projects.
  • Compliance: Ensure control systems meet safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Desired Experience:
    • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in controls engineering, particularly with PLC programming and troubleshooting.
    • Familiarity with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix), Siemens (S7, TIA Portal), Mitsubishi, or similar.
    • Knowledge of industrial automation systems, including sensors, actuators, drives, and motors.
    • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems integration and programming is a bonus.
    • Previous work in manufacturing, automotive, food processing, or other industrial sectors is preferred.
  • Required Skills:
    • Proficiency in programming languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text (ST), Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Sequential Function Chart (SFC).
    • Strong understanding of electrical circuits, industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus, etc.), and automation hardware.
    • Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic abilities.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team, managing multiple tasks and projects effectively.
    • Familiarity with safety standards (e.g., NFPA, IEC, OSHA) and experience with risk assessments and compliance audits is advantageous.
    • Proficiency with PLC programming software such as RSLogix 5000, TIA Portal, GX Works, or similar.
    • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAD software for schematic design is a plus.

Education:

  • HNC or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related field

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Adaptability to changing project requirements and deadlines.
