Job Title: Highway Design Engineer for a London Borough Council

We are currently seeking Highway Design Engineer to join our client's dynamic team in delivering exciting Highways and Sustainable Transport Projects. As the Highway Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in planning, developing, and delivering projects funded by the Levelling Up Fund (LUF).
We are looking for an Interim Highway Designer who has a traffic engineering background. This person needs to assist a Principal Designer (PD) and the Project Manager (PM) for the delivery of a Multi-million Pound project. This project is a joint venture between the Council and London Legacy Development Cooperation (LLDC). The project is a highway realignment and public realm improvements project.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reports to the Principal Designer on a day-to-day running of the design delivery. The candidate is also expected assist a Senior Site Engineer and Project Manager as instructed by the PD during the delivery on site.
- Proficient in Highways Design and the Manual Contract Document for Highways Works, to produce construction series drawings, utilising Autodesk AutoCAD software.
- Attend design meetings with clients, with or without PD/PM and required to prepare technical notes and information for the PD's review.
- Specific Health and Safety and risk management responsibilities in respect of co-ordinating service delivery Key Tasks and Responsibilities Key tasks and responsibilities are intended to be a guide to the range and level of work expected of the candidate. This is not an exhaustive list of all tasks that may fall to the candidate and employees will be expected to carry out such other reasonable duties which may be required from time to time as set out by the PD or Senior Project Manager who sits above the PD
- Arrange for and manage workshops for various stakeholders, Architects and designers
- To liaise with external organisations including other boroughs, Network Rail, TfL, departments related to approval of designs.
- Undertake research, design and evaluate the cost and value of alternative options and solutions to identified problems
- Organise own workload together with the supervision of other project members to achieve targets set in conjunction with management of the project
- Assist the Site Engineer (SE) on queries related to design on a day-to-day basis who will be managing site works and civils contractor.
- To deputise, on occasion and as required, for the PD and SE.
Requirements:
- Proven highway design skills. This includes full competency on current highway and urban design guidance's and practices.
- Fully versed on 3D level design.
- Strong analytical and numeracy skills
- Articulate both in written and oral form
- Ability to listen and respond sensitively to the needs of the management and requirements of the project
- Ability to build effective and productive working relationships with colleagues
- Knowledge of the requirements of relevant Health and Safety legislation.
- A confident, clear and effective communicator with the ability to adjust their communication both orally and in writing with colleagues and stakeholders
- Knowledge of relevant legislation relevant to the service area
- High level of knowledge and professional skills sufficient to undertake and/or oversee a range of Highway design, Traffic Management and general Civil Engineering schemes between a value of £1m and £5m value
