Role: Principal Control Systems Engineer

As a Principal Control Systems Engineer based in Wellingborough, you will be responsible for the technical aspects of designing, developing, and testing software to control powertrain components and associated equipment. Your focus will be on delivering high-quality solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design & Development: Own the design, development, testing, and documentation of control code for powertrain components (motors, inverters, chargers, DC-DC converters, vehicle/powertrain control units) and associated equipment.
  • Standardisation: Define a standardised approach to control architecture, incorporating industry best practices and functional safety considerations.
  • Safety Requirements: Collaborate with Functional Safety Engineers to specify functional and safety requirements, ensuring alignment with Electrical Engineering.
  • Device Drivers & Algorithms: Lead the development of device drivers and algorithms for state estimation in vehicle control systems, optimising performance.
  • Fault Management: Develop fault management strategies tailored to each application.
  • Documentation: Document and maintain the BMS Boundary Diagram and BMS FMEA.
  • Testing Procedures: Define and support testing procedures for software-related functions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams to ensure timely, cost-effective, and budget-compliant delivery of supporting software and hardware.
  • Calibration & Thermal Management: Perform sensor calibration and develop strategies for thermal management of powertrain components.
  • Integration: Integrate vehicle dynamics functions into the vehicle control system code, supported by vehicle dynamics and simulation engineers.
  • Hardware & Software Selection: Support the selection of hardware and software capabilities, including control unit selection, I/O allocation, and software tools/compiler requirements.
Required Experience:
  • Educational Background: Degree in Software, Hardware, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant Engineering field.
  • Professional Experience: Experience in designing and delivering automotive powertrain control systems from design to production in automotive or motorsport applications as part of an OEM, Tier 1 supplier, or consultancy.
  • Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge of ICE & EV powertrain components and architectures, and proficiency with software coding and validation tools such as Matlab, Simulink, C++, etc.
  • Functional Safety: Familiarity with Functional Safety methodology and requirements.
  • Vehicle Control Systems: Experience in developing vehicle control systems for ICE and/or electric vehicles.
  • Standards & Approvals: Understanding of vehicle test and approval standards.
