• Carry out a range of horticultural activities in support of the organisation's charitable aims and visitor experience
• Take responsibility for the promotion of UK native species and habitats across the estate
• Work closely with the Education Department to ensure relevant signage of plant species and aid exhibit designs; deliver horticultural-related education to people of various ages and abilities in the form of talks and presentations when required
• Collaborate with other teams to deliver on-site UK biodiversity activities and develop biodiversity areas to support training, volunteering, and public engagement
• Keep abreast of the latest developments in pest control and advances in plant propagation techniques
• Work with relevant departments regarding the collection plan to develop plant collections, investigating and recommending new plant species as appropriate
• Contribute to educational, media, and marketing initiatives to encourage and promote public understanding of plants and horticulture, including representing the organisation at events
• Maintain the department in accordance with DEFRA legislation
• Monitor and keep records of plant quarantine issues and legal guidelines related to horticulture
• Ensure compliance with all Health & Safety regulations and procedures
• Manage all members of the Gardens Team and coordinate team activity on a daily basis, including staff rotas, staff reviews, assisting with recruitment and selection of team members, and managing performance or other issues professionally and in line with organisational policies
• Identify appropriate development opportunities for self and team, attending and arranging formal and informal training
• Manage volunteers within the department, review their work, and ensure they are enjoying their volunteering experience
• Ensure high standards of plant welfare
• Ensure up-to-date knowledge of relevant best practices and statutory regulations, including Health & Safety and environmental legislation
• Work within Health & Safety procedures to ensure animal, personal, and visitor security
• Use and maintain hand tools and basic light machinery and plant
• Maintain understanding of all emergency procedures; coordinate and engage in practice routines
• Interact with members of the public in a courteous and professional manner at all times
• Undertake work in other departments as per the needs of the business (full training will be provided prior to taking on any new duties or tasks)
• Attend team meetings and undertake agreed actions; attend formal and informal training as required
• Other duties to support effective and efficient site working, as required
