Swindon, UK

Company: NATIONAL TRUST

Job Type: Permanent, FullTime

Salary: £30,966 per annum

Summary

We are Recruiting for an Assistant Podcast Producer on a 12 month FTC to join our podcast team and help support the wider Content & Publishing team.

Within an organisation that’s over 125 years’ old, there are history, tales and legends around almost every corner; if you have a passion for bypassing the obvious and digging deep to find the most gripping, surprising and compelling stories, this is the role for you.

What it's like to work here

The Podcast team are producing their eighth season of the National Trust Podcast and have a back-catalogue of over 150 episodes (including some mini-series) for a growing audience. The team is led by the Senior Podcast Producer and you’ll be one of two Assistant Podcast Producers (APP), working at all stages of the podcast production process, alongside freelance APPs and sound editing staff. The team often work from home but work in our central office at least one day a week.

We’re bigger than you think, we’re more complicated than we appear and we’re larger scale than you’d imagine. We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, and we’ve got so much more we want to achieve. We’re for everyone, for ever and we really mean that. We want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

The role involves some travel to work with National Trust colleagues, and visit our projects and properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland as required

What you'll be doing

The National Trust Podcast isn’t your typical studio-based interview-style podcast, so you’ll use your documentary or narrative storytelling skills to produce a well-researched and captivating podcast.

You’ll help to create compelling content and immersive audio, transporting listeners via podcasts to our special places, as well as factual programming showcasing our research, curatorial skills, and expertise.

Our podcasts are generally recorded outdoors and often in challenging conditions, so you’ll be confident and have knowledge of recording audio in the field using a variety of equipment (as part of this you’ll need to have a full UK driving licence and be confident driving long distances and in rural locations).

You’ll have a flare for writing scripts and copy. In this role you’ll be writing episodes and voice over scripts that keep listeners engaged and supporting stories and copy for digital to entice them to listen in the first place. You’ll have the ability to build interesting, engaging and surprising narratives in the edit while providing balance and accurate and credible information. You’ll use your creative skills to utilise sound design as part of the narrative to bring stories and locations to life for the listener.

Who we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this vacancy in the document attached. You do not need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what is possible in this role.

You will:

  • Have evidence of working as an assistant producer (or equivalent) on journalistic, documentary or narrative storytelling audio or videos.
  • Be able to demonstrate excellent research skills, finding exciting stories, credible and informative guests, and intriguing story angles.
  • Be able to demonstrate confidence, technical and creative ability in post production and proficiency in editing software such as Adobe Audition.
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to manage client relations with clear communication. You’ll be working with various teams, management, and production partners inside the Trust and externally.
  • Be digitally proficient, you’ll be writing text for digital platforms such as web and social, and using hosting platforms to upload and syndicate podcasts.
  • An interest in the podcast industry, how it’s evolving, trends, audience behaviour and the opportunities for podcast creators
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to direct talent and contributors on location and in the studio/remote recordings.
  • Have an ability to work flexibly and under pressure; although we work on a twice monthly upload schedule, we are generally working on multiple projects with many moving parts that can sometimes change right up until TX.
