About the RoleAs a Payroll & Pensions Coordinator at DMU, you will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive payroll and pensions service that supports our staff across the University. This role is crucial in ensuring that all payroll processes are accurate, efficient, and compliant with HMRC regulations and University policies. You will oversee the end-to-end processing of monthly payroll, including managing statutory deductions, salary sacrifices, and pension contributions for multiple schemes, such as LGPS, TPS, and USS. A key part of your role will involve preparing and checking payroll reports, managing reconciliations, and ensuring all data is maintained and processed securely in line with GDPR standards.
In addition, you’ll work closely with internal departments and external providers, resolving complex payroll queries and providing expert guidance on legislative and contractual issues. You’ll also be involved in month-end and year-end processing, payroll system upgrades, and archiving processes to maintain accurate historical records. This role offers an exciting opportunity to take part in project work, such as implementing new payroll initiatives, identifying areas for improvement, and supporting change across payroll and pensions functions. You will be a valued contributor in developing processes that enhance our People Services team, helping DMU deliver an excellent employee experience.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will be an experienced payroll professional with a strong background in payroll processing, pensions administration, and HR systems. You will hold a relevant qualification (such as CIPP) or have extensive experience in a similar role, with familiarity in handling public sector pension schemes like LGPS, TPS, or USS being an advantage.
We’re looking for someone with solid technical skills, including proficiency in payroll software (ideally SAP or similar) and advanced Excel knowledge. You will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and an understanding of compliance requirements.
Beyond technical expertise, you’ll be a customer-focused professional who can communicate complex information clearly to various stakeholders. Calm under pressure and highly organised, you’ll be capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines. A proactive, solution-oriented approach and strong interpersonal skills will enable you to drive improvements within our payroll and pensions services effectively.
