Job Title: School Nurse Locality Lead

Location:  Surbiton, school and community venues in the borough.

Band: 6

Hours: Up to 37.5 hours per week

Report To: School Health Lead

Accountable to: Service Lead

Job Purpose

  • Lead a locality team of skill-mixed staff to deliver the Healthy Child Programme, including child-centered, evidence-based activities to promote the health and wellbeing of school-aged children and young people attending state-maintained schools or home educated within the borough of Kingston Upon Thames.
  • Contribute to safeguarding children, identifying and responding to children at risk, to improve their health and wellbeing and reduce inequalities.
  • Assess health needs and implement planned programs of care for safeguarded children, delegating work where appropriate to competent team members.

Person Specification

Job Title: School Nurse Locality Lead

Education, Qualifications & Training:

  • Registered Nurse with Specialist Practitioner Community Public Health Nurse Qualification (candidates with extensive experience in School Nursing Practice who don’t hold the SCPHN qualification will be considered).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in School Health/Health Visiting, or equivalent community role.
  • Educated to degree level.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Practice assessor.

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of factors affecting the health and well-being of children and young people.
  • Working knowledge of clinical governance.
  • Working knowledge of safeguarding and public health policy, guidelines, and evidence base that informs practice in School Nursing.

Experience:

  • Working with safeguarded children.
  • Working with sexually active young people.
  • Working with children and families with complex needs.
  • Delivery of interventions with an outcome focus to improve health and wellbeing.
  • Leading a team.
  • Facilitating groups.
  • Mentoring staff and students.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - influencing, negotiating, and communication with team members, service users, and partner organisations.
  • Critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding and negotiating barriers to communication.
  • Teaching and mentorship to support the development of staff and students.
  • Able to work autonomously, without direct supervision.
  • Able to demonstrate and promote teamwork.
  • Adaptable to change.
  • IT skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and an ability to learn new digital skills.

Personal Qualities:

  • Highly self-motivated and passionate about improving health and wellbeing.
  • Non-judgemental.

Other Factors:

  • A full DBS disclosure will be required.
  • Full valid driving licence and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes or access to a bike, with the facility to transport bulky items such as measuring equipment.
