We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide support for a child with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a Key Stage 2 setting. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to work closely with a child to support their emotional, social, and academic development in a safe and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individual support to a child with SEMH needs, ensuring their inclusion in all aspects of school life.
- Implement tailored strategies to support the child's emotional well-being, helping them to regulate their behaviour and manage their emotions effectively.
- Assist in creating and maintaining a calm and structured environment for the child to work in, reducing distractions and providing clear expectations.
- Help the child develop positive social skills and foster meaningful relationships with peers and staff.
- Support the child in accessing the curriculum, making adjustments as necessary to accommodate their learning style and needs.
- Encourage the child's independence in academic tasks while offering appropriate support when required.
- Monitor and track the child's progress, reporting on emotional, social, and academic development to the class teacher and SENCO.
- Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and other professionals to implement personalised plans and interventions.
- Use positive reinforcement techniques to promote desirable behaviour and help the child build resilience and coping strategies.
- Assist in preparing resources and creating a positive, engaging learning environment for the child.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Experience working with children who have SEMH needs or other behavioural challenges, ideally in a school setting.
- A good understanding of SEMH and the impact it can have on a child's learning and development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with the child, staff, and parents.
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies, with the ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in challenging situations.
- The ability to adapt and respond flexibly to the changing needs of the child.
- A proactive and solution-focused approach to overcoming barriers to learning and behaviour.
- Experience working in a 1:1 support role is desirable, but not essential.
- Relevant qualifications, such as a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or training in SEMH-specific strategies, are desirable.
