Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate. These challenges need the bold research our funding supports, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Senior Research Manager to join our team.

Within the Early Career and Career Development Researchers team, you will be working on projects supporting future leaders. Part of the role is supporting the assessment processes that help us allocate funding in the Early Career or Career Development Awards, and around that core work we focus on how we can support the researchers and their environments to allow them to reach their potential. That might be anything from talking to the community about their opportunities with Wellcome, helping shape how Universities deliver leadership training, working on career precarity solutions or establishing collaborative projects with our partners. We have a wide range of research career stages we interact with, and with the breadth of the Discovery Research remit it leads to an endlessly varied workflow, over which you can apply your expert skillset. We are looking for people with an interest in research career progression, a passion for presenting with clarity to diverse audiences, and a willingness to listen to our diverse stakeholders to gain the intelligence we need to help shape our future strategy.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in Population and Public Health, Molecular science, Human Genetics and Genomics, and Immunology. However, Discovery Research covers a broad remit and welcomes applications with a background in any discipline inside or outside of academia who has suitable experience for the role.

In this role you will:

  • Contribute to the leadership, development and delivery of discovery research, ensuring strategic objectives are met.

  • Support the Early Careers and Career Development Researchers Team to convene, fund and share learning leading on the implementation and assessment of funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports and liaising with internal and external groups and individuals as required.

  • Lead on scoping areas of interest, shaping and advancing internal research and development projects and be responsible for a number of large projects that will cover one or more of the activities described above.

  • Contribute to the effective delivery of funding decisions, providing critical scientific assessment of applications, participating in decision-making reviews and making clear recommendations to senior management.

  • Identify and manage larger projects independently, acting as the main point of contact, liaising with external stakeholders or partners for the ongoing management and conclusion of major initiatives.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Able to demonstrate a breadth of research expertise in a relevant field through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting.

  • Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities

  • Significant experience in working in relevant field

  • Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different background and different seniority levels.

  • Excellent organisational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities

  • Articulate with strong verbal communication skills. Adept at delivering presentations
