We are seeking a Technical Specialist in Histopathology and Imaging within the Parasites and Microbes (PaM) Programme on a Permanent Contract at Sanger Institute.

About the Role:

This multifaceted role has a variety of objectives that complement one another and are there to support both the research within the Parasites and Microbes (PaM) Programme with histopathology and the wider Institute in electron and advanced light imaging. You will be expected to:
  • Provide expertise in optimisation and experimental design on projects involving histopathology. These will include a range of different tissues from wax-embedded human lung biopsies to cryopreserved parasitic worms. Samples will need to be sectioned, mounted and stained prior to imaging and annotation
  • Work with core spatial transcriptomics facility to maximise insight from incredibly precious samples, investigating host-microbiome interactions using spatial transcriptomics and bulk RNAseq approaches
  • Support the Imaging Lead with the management and training on advanced light microscopes and learn electron microscopy in order to provide a degree of resilience within the PaM Imaging Suite

As Histopathology and Imaging Specialist you will:
  • Hold delegated laboratory management of specific areas of the imaging suites under supervision from the imaging lead.
  • Work closely with research teams to understand requirements for specific imaging techniques.
  • Work closely with PaM operational managers to ensure compliance with Sanger policies
  • Discuss expected spend on facility improvements and equipment spending
  • Manage relationships, communicating requirements, monitoring progress and outputs, exchange information and develop best practice
  • Arrange site visits for repair or preventative maintenance for all instrumentation

About You:

You will be expected to have a passion for facilitating cutting-edge scientific research, orientated to detail and flexibility, thrive working in a fast-paced environment and managing and prioritising a varied workload.

The decision to appoint the successful applicant would be based on technical skills and experience.

Essential Technical Skills:
  • Educated to degree level in biological sciences or equivalent work experience
  • In depth knowledge and experience of practical laboratory work
  • Cryosectioning experience
  • Other histology experience e.g. section, mount and stain tissues
  • Experience in Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH)
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations
  • Experience of working with human tissue samples/the Human Tissue Act

Other Information

We have a flexible-hybrid working pattern model to allow for flexibly between remote and office working. However, this role requires the successful individual to be on campus a minimum of 3 days a week, with the flexibility to be on site whenever shipments are expected.
