Summary

As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

This role is required to work with vulnerable groups including children and any offer of employment or volunteering is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

What it's like to work here

Dunwich Heath is a 130-hectare important coastal lowland heathland that once formed part of what was known as the Suffolk Sandlings, an area of heathland that extended all the way from Lowestoft to Felixstowe and as far inland as Ipswich. The site comprises a wide range of habitats including heather heath, acid grassland, vegetated shingle beach, sandy cliffs, ditch, and scrub woodland.  

Now looked after by the National Trust, over 100,000 visitors come to experience this special place every year. Our core purpose is to balance being an accessible site where everyone feels welcome whilst conserving and enhancing Dunwich Heaths precious habitats and species. 

What you'll be doing

You'll develop and implement surveying and monitoring plans for species, habitats and, site fabric and infrastructure. Working with the portfolio team and our partners to create strategies to mitigate the impacts of visitor displacement and pressures on this important site along with working closely with the Project Manager to engage with Sizewell C working groups.

You'll pro-actively engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote the responsible enjoyment of Dunwich Heath, while collecting and collating recreational activity data to establish a baseline and monitor change, as well as helping recruit and supervise volunteers to assist with delivery. 

You'll be supporting the Area Ranger in delivering a range of practical conservation work for the benefit of our highly designated habitats and species.

You'll also be a duty manager for site on a shared rota basis, which involves overseeing the on the day running of the site, unlocking/opening buildings, responding and dealing with issues, ensuring a smooth opening day for visitors/staff and volunteers.

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence
