A new opportunity to join our team as a Senior Technical Assistant. This role is a multi- disciplinary role - to carry out the processing and correct disposal of laboratory waste on site as per local guidelines. In addition to this the role will also be key in assisting in the provision of the media service to meet the institute's needs, principally for prokaryotic media but incorporating other medium and buffers. To assist in the processing and sterilization of laboratory glassware.

You will be responsible for:
  • Conduct routine procedures with standard protocols to ensure the collection and processing of biological and chemical waste along with the provision of media / reagent service to the Campus.
  • Work with other team members, (Media) to assist in the production of sterile media for the institute.
  • Plan and organise own day to day activities in conjunction with Principal Technician to ensure team service levels are met.
  • Arrange and assist in the ad hoc collection of waste laboratory chemicals in accordance with service levels.
  • Maintain waste records to meet the requirements of regulation in line with local procedures.
  • Supervise and train technical assistants in routine procedures where required.
  • Support the Principal Technician in ensuring that all services delivered by the team (media, liquid nitrogen delivery etc) are maintained to acceptable levels providing cover where necessary.
  • Work within a team to ensure consistent levels of service across all core support services plus have the ability to work independently.
  • Operate glasswashers, autoclaves and other equipment in accordance with local procedures and carry out basic maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of waste and other regulations as required to carry out duties safely.

About You:

We are looking to recruit an individual who is looking to move into a busy and varied Science Support Services Technician role. Having to support multiple buildings across a Campus we are looking for a motivated person who has the ability and confidence to work well within a team but also independently. The ability to be able to organise your own time to maintain service levels is key.

Having some practical experience of working within a media production role, you should be a good communicator with good organisational skills and a flexible approach to working and a willingness to learn / development either new or key skills.

About Us:

The Technical Science Support Team provides key practical support for research / administrative teams across the Wellcome Genome Campus. We are relatively small team which cover a variety of important duties from laboratory waste collection and sterilisation, media and core aqueous consumables preparations, laundering of laboratory lab coats and maintenance of levels of cryogenic storage vessels to name but a few examples.

Essential Skills:
  • Previous laboratory experience in a relevant field
  • Basic literacy and numeracy
  • Good communication skills
  • Manual dexterity
  • Flexible approach to work and a willingness to learn
  • Ability to work both as part of team and also without supervision
  • Organisational skills - able to organise own workload
  • Basic supervisory skills
  • Basic computer literacy

Other Information:
  • This role is based on site 5 days a week, and working hours are 7:30-3:30 Monday-Thursday and 7:30-3 on Fridays. However, hours can be flexible.
  • Salary range in the region of £27,000 to £30,000
