We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Trust Tax Accountant to join our tax team. The successful candidate will focus on managing the tax compliance and advisory needs of trusts, estates, and high-net-worth individuals. You will be responsible for preparing trust tax returns, advising on tax planning opportunities, and ensuring compliance with current tax legislation, particularly in relation to income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Trust Tax Compliance:

    • Prepare and file UK Trust and Estate Tax Returns (SA900) for various types of trusts (discretionary, life interest, bare trusts, etc.).
    • Calculate and report trust-related tax liabilities, including income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax.
    • Manage compliance for offshore trusts and non-resident trusts, ensuring all UK tax obligations are met.
    • Submit tax returns and payments within statutory deadlines and handle any queries from HMRC.
  • Tax Planning and Advisory:

    • Provide tailored tax planning advice to trustees and beneficiaries, focusing on tax-efficient distribution strategies.
    • Advise clients on the tax implications of setting up, running, and winding up trusts.
    • Identify and implement inheritance tax planning strategies, including the use of trusts for estate and succession planning.
    • Assist clients with capital gains tax planning, including the disposal of trust assets and the use of available reliefs.
  • Client Management:

    • Act as the primary tax advisor for a portfolio of trust clients, ensuring a high level of service and maintaining long-term relationships.
    • Work closely with trustees, beneficiaries, and other professional advisors to provide a holistic approach to trust taxation.
    • Liaise with clients to gather required information, explain complex tax matters, and offer bespoke solutions.
  • Trust Administration Support:

    • Assist with trust accounting and administration tasks where required, including preparing trust accounts and calculating distributions.
    • Collaborate with legal and financial professionals to ensure seamless trust administration.
  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Keep up-to-date with changes in UK trust tax legislation, including changes to inheritance tax, capital gains tax, and anti-avoidance rules affecting trusts.
    • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, including anti-money laundering (AML) obligations.
    • Manage relationships with HMRC on behalf of clients, including handling tax investigations and inquiries.
  • Advisory and Collaboration:

    • Work closely with the wider tax team to provide integrated advice on personal and corporate tax issues related to trusts.
    • Assist in the development of tax planning strategies for high-net-worth individuals, families, and their trusts.
    • Contribute to business development efforts by identifying new opportunities and assisting in proposals and client pitches.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field.
    • ACA, ACCA, or CTA qualified (or working towards qualification).
  • Experience:

    • 3+ years of experience in tax compliance or tax advisory, specifically in the area of trust taxation.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of trust structures, UK trust tax laws, and reporting requirements.
    • Experience working with high-net-worth individuals and their trust structures, including non-resident and offshore trusts.
