A leading University in London are seeking a Strategic Communications Officer to join their established Communications, Marketing and Recruitment team on a six-month FTC with the view to become permanent.

It helps support the academic and ambassadorial role of the senior staff by managing specified digital channels, assisting with presentations, speech writing, letters and other forms of communication. These activities will complement the wider work of the CMR directorate which is a key enabling function for the University’s strategy. 

Main duties

  • To work on specified strategic communications projects that reflect the university’s strategy and key organisational priorities. Support departments across the university in shaping and delivering their communication activities, to ensure the consistent and accurate sharing of key business messages to defined audiences
  • To be a copywriter for senior staff across a range of different platforms (letters, presentations, speeches, blog posts, social media accounts) including planning and drafting content
  • To develop a good understanding and knowledge of the working methods and networks used by senior staff
  • To produce high-quality, accurate documentation and papers, including letters, memos, reports and presentations as required and to source images for presentations
  • To work closely with CMR teams including the Business Partnering team providing support, advice and guidance where necessary
  • To undertake research tasks as required, through accessing data and information internally, from the internet and other sources as required
  • Support and cover the Staff Communications Officer, including producing the weekly Staff News email
  • Provide insight and data to strategic communications team that will inform communications and campaign planning, reporting, evaluation and optimisation
  • Support the delivery of the CMR strategy  
  • Own, develop and contribute to the relevant policies, processes and ways of working to support successful content production, communications and campaigning planning and delivery

General duties

  • Play an active role within the CMR Directorate, acting as role-model and champion for business partnering and planned, integrated communications
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required
  • Ensure that you are aware of and aligned with Regulations, Strategy, and Objectives to work together to proactively advance Equality and Diversity
  • At all times to help maintain a safe working environment by participating in training as necessary and following Health and Safety Codes of Practice and Policy
  • On occasion, to represent the university at events. This will require working occasional weekend and evening events.

Experience needed  

  • Experience working in a corporate communications role in a communications or press office setting
  • Experience in the Higher Education Sector (desirable)
  • Writing speeches, letters, news stories, features and explainers, including subbing content provided by others
  • Managing and creating content for an organisation’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and using them to communicate successfully and sensitively with a variety of audiences
  • Handling senior stakeholders with competing demands or difficult issues in a tactful and diplomatic manner
