Our client is seeking a Yard Operative to join their team in Sunderland. As a Yard Operative, you will play an integral role in ensuring the smooth operation of the yard by carrying out a range of tasks, including weighing vehicles, inspecting and segregating scrap, and operating heavy machinery.

Hours: Monday - Friday : 7:30am - 4:30pm

Key Responsibilities:

  • Weighing scrap lorries in and out using the weighbridge and ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Loading and unloading lorries while following safety procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate records of incoming and outgoing loads and machine usage.
  • Ensuring compliance with site rules, including proper PPE and safe working practises.
  • Inspecting and grading scrap, applying deductions objectively and professionally.
  • Sorting and segregating different scrap grades and removing hazardous materials.
  • Maximising profits by identifying and segregating non-ferrous/premium ferrous metal.
  • Operating machinery safely and in accordance with instructions.
  • Reporting any machinery failures, breakdowns, or damage.
  • Using systems such as SAP and radiation detections and coordinating with IT/external companies for issue resolution.
  • Safeguarding the yard and protecting assets.
  • Performing basic maintenance on plant machinery when required.
  • Managing stockpiles safely and optimising capacity.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to coordinate work activities efficiently and safely.
  • Participating in meetings to address safety, operational, and other issues.
  • Following the daily work plan to achieve output targets.
  • Assisting in implementing procedures related to Scrap Processing Operations.
  • Logging hazards, near misses, and accidents using ProSafety software.
  • Complying with all safety and environmental policies.
  • Being flexible with working hours and break times as required.
  • Willingness to travel to other scrap yards for learning, development, and covering absences when needed.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience in following health and safety procedures, ideally within an industrial environment.
  • Previous experience operating heavy machinery is preferred.
  • Ability to solve problems, work independently, and be self-motivated.
  • Comfortable using IT systems, such as SAP.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal is desirable.
  • Strong sense of accountability for asset protection.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Valid driving licence required.
