Job Description:
Bp Solutions has a centrally based team of experienced specialist engineers covering key Refining and Production disciplines. The Engineering department is critical in supporting bp’s operating sites to ensure safe, compliant, reliable and efficient operations.
The Process Safety team within Engineering supports operations, projects, process tools development, engineering technical practices and training to build capability and reduce risks. An Individual contributor with strong technical and influencing skills, a senior level leader, integrated as part of the business leadership with substantial impact on business outcomes. They have a degree of autonomy to work on larger, long-term issues, especially multi-disciplinary problems. They are expected to keep up with external developments in their area and related emerging fields.
- Provides technical leadership for Process Safety engineering. Holds the definitive technical view setting and implementing engineering technical practices and inputting directly into global standardisation efforts.
- Acts as Single Point of Accountability for the bp MAR process.
- Ensures technical practices are up to date, practical, pragmatic and aligned to industry requirements, and communicates and maintains the business's technical practices and tools to verify consistent application.
- Provides expertise in application, advice on deviation requests and expert understanding of related industry codes and standards.
- Analyses process safety incidents, supporting investigations and subsequent learnings, advising on emerging trends and recommending areas for improvement.
- Recommends and supports implementation of innovative approaches to process safety engineering including digital solutions.
- Influences family of related disciplines long term health - supporting diverse succession plans and improving capability through coaching and mentoring potential Advisors.
- Follows bp's Engineering Principles, aligns with bp's Code of Conduct, and demonstrates strong leadership through bp's Leadership Expectations and Values & Behaviours.
Essential experience and job requirements
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, or equivalent.
- Recognised expert in quantitative risk assessment.
- Skills and experience (including MAR mastery) to perform the role of Single Point of Accountability for the bp Major Accident Risk process for both onshore and offshore.
- Deep understanding of consequence modelling tools and techniques relevant to bp’s operations.
- Demonstrable ability to act as bp’s technical lead on practice for design and location of occupied buildings.
- Powerful advocate of application of inherently safer design and fire & blast hazard management in projects and operations.
- Recognised as having deep technical expertise across the range of process safety engineering topics including HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, fire protection and hazardous area classification.
- Knowledge of industrial plant operations, projects, and process safety concepts in the oil and gas
- Knowledge of key process safety industry codes & standards and how to apply them.
- Knowledge of process safety regulatory frameworks relevant to bp operations.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels within the organization and the energy industry, influencing with formal authority.
- Consistent track record of applying knowledge and skills to solve key engineering problems.
- Ability to provide definitive process safety input to bp’s key risk-based decisions.
- Ability to develop internal and external technical practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in leading external activities (e.g. Joint Industry Projects, industry association committees).
- Ability to interface optimally in cross-functional teams.
- Proven record of coaching and developing technical talent for process safety.
- Experience of developing and effectively delivering technical training.
- Holder of appropriate professional accreditation (e.g. CEng, PE) or willingness to achieve in a reasonable amount of time
In addition to the required qualifications the successful candidate to have experience in one or more of the following:
- Knowledge of and experience working with technical providers and engineering contractors.
- Experience of both production and refining projects and operations.
- Experience of implementing process safety concepts for low carbon technologies.
