Our client seeks an exceptional Head of Computational Science and Engineering to drive innovation, collaboration, and strategic direction in advancing technologies crucial to their mission of delivering clean, sustainable energy solutions. As a Head of Computational Science & Engineering (CSE), you will be responsible for driving forward the convergence of HPC and AI/ML to accelerate modelling, simulation, visualisation, and analysis at the exascale. This role is to lead a rapidly growing team of scientists and engineers and to help democratise state-of-the-art computing technologies and methods across the business and its growing supply chain - to deliver “actionable” i.e. predictive, capability In plasma science, materials science and for the engineering design of complex systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing and growing a team of Computer/Data Science, HPC and simulation-focused AI/ML experts as well as working closely with the Head of Data Solutions and other leaders/specialists.
  • Developing and keeping up to date an engaging and empowering strategy and delivery framework for actionable, scale-out simulation and supporting data science/ AI/ML capability.
  • Understanding, regularly monitoring and mitigating CSE risks within the Computing Division and across other divisions.
  • Developing and delivering training and awareness campaigns to increase the understanding and adoption of transformative solutions in HPC / AI / ML.
  • Engaging with Professional Body Membership and Community Participation (e.g. ACM, IEEE, SIGHPC etc.).
  • Working closely with the Director of Computing Programmes, seeking opportunities outside the organisation for collaboration/partnership and/or bringing in income (grants, contracts, donations, etc.) especially around the UK to identify and nurture international collaborations around supercomputing and powerplant design.


The ideal candidate will have or be:

  • PhD, master’s degree or equivalent knowledge/ experience.
  • Significant experience in leading modelling, simulation and innovation in a research or engineering environment.
  • Proven Experience in people management for various teams of 20+ technology professionals and the ability to define and establish new capabilities and develop others as leaders.
  • Ability to communicate, build trust and influence at all levels - from fusion specialists to central Government and the general public - this post holder will require confidence and be adept in presenting technological advances and business information at the highest level, attracting keynote presentations at the world’s most prestigious conferences, and communicating with the popular press to publicise our clients CSE mission.
  • Experience in digital innovation in the fusion sector, in a national lab, university or pioneering SME esp. powerplant engineering design such as materials simulation, plasma simulation or the engineering design of complex, multi-physics, multi-scale strongly coupled systems.
  • Outstanding mathematical ability and extensive knowledge in the simulation domain.
